Nursing theories inform practice by providing background information and rationale for quality care delivery (Younas & Quennell, 2019). Since concepts, models, and philosophies underpin nursing theories, they allow nurses to shift from the traditional nursing practice to embrace an advanced, evidence-based practice. Nursing theories are either grand, middle-range, or situation-specific depending on the levels of abstraction (Masters, 2021). In this sense, the level of abstraction refers to the broadness and information ambiguity, as well as the generalizability of a specific nursing theory.

Nurses face challenges in translating theoretical knowledge to practice due to abstraction concerns. For instance, grand theories are broad and general, affecting their generalizability and application in specific clinical contexts (Hickman, 2019). To ensure the optimal utilization of nursing theories in the current nursing practice, it is essential to encourage modern nursing research and renovate nursing theories to fit different nursing contexts. For example, researchers can renovate existing grand theories and integrate knowledge into situation-specific theories to provide generalizable concepts, models, and philosophies. These steps would be fundamental in improving theory-guided practice and enhancing evidence-based nursing.
