Community Teaching Presentation Paper
Prevention
Prevention involves any actions taken to keep populations healthy, and avoid the risks related to poor health, illness, injury, or early death. Prevention is also known as preventive health. Prevention actions focusses on reducing the development and severity of chronic diseases.
Prevention Categories
Primary prevention- interventions before health effects occur, using measures such as vaccinations
Secondary Prevention- efforts/interventions to identify diseases in their initial stages through screenings
Tertiary Prevention- disease management at the post-diagnosis stage, to slow or stop disease progression using actions such as chemotherapies and rehabilitation
Vulnerable populations
Vulnerable populations are also known as high-risk populations
Vulnerable populations include patients who are racial/ethnic minorities, socioeconomically disadvantaged, underinsured, children, elderly, and patients with certain medical conditions
Importance of Secondary Prevention
Secondary prevention helps introduce the appropriate treatment and interventions for a disease (WHO, n.d.) Improves the chances for positive health outcomes Secondary prevention is cost effective, as opposed to treatment and diagnosis Examples of Secondary Prevention Measures Secondary prevention measures include; Mammograms- for early detection of breast cancer Regular blood Pressure testing Pap-smears to diagnose cervical cancer in its subclinical state before progression Colonoscopies for early detection of colon cancer |
“It is essential to take up screening opportunities” |

Why focus on Vulnerable Populations? Their health and healthcare issues are more exacerbated by social factors Vulnerable populations face different health disparities and inaccessibility to health and health services According to Amboree et al. (2022), most of the members of vulnerable populations are uninsured, thus secondary prevention helps reduce cost pressure that would have been caused by complications on the healthcare system |
Screenings Save you from Disease complications Costs to treat complications Disease advancement to irreversible stages following early disease detection and intervention Emotional turmoil after realizing that the disease stages has advanced Negative effects on psychological and physical health |
