Discussion Post: Diabetes Mellitus Paper
The topic chosen is diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder caused by a lack of insulin or inadequate insulin in the body, resulting in high blood glucose (CDC.gov, n.d.). There are three types of diabetes mellitus; type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, also called juvenile diabetes, is characterized by low insulin production or even a lack of insulin production by the pancreas. High blood sugar levels cause type 2 diabetes in the body since the body resists insulin or produces low insulin responsible for blood sugar regulation. Gestational diabetes only shows up during pregnancy and disappears after giving birth. However, women who get gestational diabetes are at a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life. The reason why this topic interests me is due to its impact on the healthcare system. I chose diabetes mellitus since I would like to understand it in depth.
Diabetes is a healthcare issue that significantly impacts healthcare and the healthcare system. Besides, it affects the individual, family, and community. Diabetes is one of the conditions that affect many people, thus mandating them to seek healthcare services. It is also one of the health conditions that exerts the highest financial burden on the healthcare system. According to the American Diabetes Association (2018), it is the most expensive health condition to manage and treat. It also requires all interprofessional team members to work together to achieve good health outcomes. Diabetes patients require the care of endocrinologists, nurses, nutritionists, and physical therapists, among others. Diabetes also relates to other health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, neuropathy, kidney disease, and blindness, which are essential in healthcare. Diabetes mellitus topic is therefore crucial in healthcare.
