Discussion Question 1

  1. During ancient times, the Egyptians, Hebrews, Greek, and Romans seemed to be influenced by the philosophy and theories of great thinkers, such as Hippocrates and Plato. Historically, what occurred to cause a change in thinking and behaviors?

Critical thinking and behavioral changes underpin the theories of great philosophers such as Hippocrates and Plato. According to Turyahikayo (2021), philosophy entails rational inquiry that facilitates knowledge acquisition to understand reality. Reality may include all elements of life, like organizational behavior, institutional policies, religion, politics, economics, and social systems. Hassan et al. (2018) argue that philosophy emerged amidst other disciplines, like mathematics, chemistry, and physics, as a dimension of organizing knowledge on specific issues and informing individuals and societies on how to achieve a “good life.” Philosophy emerged amidst inputs and pressure from social, economic, health, and political events. For instance, wars, economic recessions, pandemics, and relational issues forced ancient philosophers and theorists to question the religious interpretation of priority issues and human existence. According to Masters (2021), philosophy contributed to the subsequent development of paradigms and schools of thought that covered essential aspects of love and pursuit of wisdom, investigation of nature, principles of reality, fundamental assumptions, law, theology, aesthetics, and metaphysics. Also, philosophy covered logic, ethics, and nursing. Knowledge acquisition in these fields contributed to changes in behavior, strengthened critical thinking, and improved understanding of reality.
