One of the cornerstone skills that we can develop as individuals is emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence carries a number of benefits for those who develop this skill. Studies have found that individuals with high levels of emotional intelligence are more successful in their careers. As a matter of fact, the top executives at the biggest companies all have one thing in common: high emotional intelligence.

Developing emotional intelligence isn’t difficult but it does take practice. Daniel Goleman in his book, , identifies five skills that contribute to emotional intelligence. Those five skills are:

1. Self-awareness: knowing one’s strengths, weaknesses, drives, values, and impact on others.

2. Self-regulation: controlling or redirecting disruptive impulses and moods.

3. Motivation: relishing achievement for its own sake.

4. Empathy: understanding other people’s emotional makeup.

5. Social skills: building rapport with others to move them in desired directions.

As you can see, self-awareness is just one of the skills required to develop emotional intelligence. So why is it that we pay so much attention to self-awareness? Well, maybe because it’s the one skill that most people are familiar with respect to emotional intelligence.
