Healthcare technologies are essential tools that promote care quality, timeliness, efficiency, and effectiveness. For instance, the widespread use of health technologies like telehealth, electronic health record systems (EHRS), computerized physician order entry (CPOE), remote patient monitoring, and clinical decision support system (CDSS) results in various benefits, including safer care delivery processes, reduction of medication errors, improved performance, reduced delays, and significant reduction of care costs. As a result, this paper presents an annotated bibliography of scholarly studies that provide insights into the importance of telehealth technology in the current healthcare systems.

The Rationale for Topic Selection and Inclusion Criteria for the Selected Articles

The major reason for selecting telehealth technology as an essential tool for improving care delivery is its contributions to the elimination of various barriers to care accessibility, affordability, and utilization. For instance, many people cannot access or afford quality and timely care because of unfavorable social determinants of health (SDOH), including poverty, unemployment, low-level education attainment, and infrastructural deficiencies. As a result, implementing telehealth technology can foster access to quality and timely for people grappling with poor social determinants of health by eliminating the need for in-person clinical visits, facilitating remote care coordination, and improving communication between healthcare professionals and patients.

Many scholarly studies support the rationale for implementing telehealth technology in the current healthcare systems. However, it is essential to select credible sources that provide reliable insights into the topic. In this assessment, I selected four credible sources from reputable databases, such as BMC, PubMed, PLOS ONE, and the National Library of Medicine (NLM). The search criteria for selecting these journal articles entailed leveraging keywords and subtitles such as “the importance of telehealth technology,” “telehealth and improved care quality,” and telehealth in the COVID-19 pandemic.” Further, I conducted a comprehensive appraisal of these evidence sources by using the CRAAP test framework that enables researchers to appraise evidence by considering five profound thresholds; currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose. In this sense, the search narrowed down to peer-reviewed journal articles published within the last five years (2017-2022) that provide justifications for implementing telehealth technology in different healthcare settings.

Further, the researchers explain the importance of implementing telehealth from the lenses of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the journal article, telemedicine is a rapidly evolving and developing technological service that supports increased access to high-quality, efficient, and cost-effective care, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This technology promotes two-way, real-time interactive communication between healthcare professionals and patients in distant sites. The researchers contend that telehealth technology played a significant role in improving care utilization during the COVID-19 pandemic by enabling patients to maintain social distancing, conduct visual visits, and leverage mobile applications to access healthcare services. Despite these benefits, the researchers underscore the need to address various barriers to the effective implementation of telehealth, including limited access to telehealth components, computer illiteracy, unawareness of telemedicine technology, and connectivity issues. As a result, this article provides scholarly justification for incorporating telehealth into nursing practice by comprehensively elaborating on the technology’s advantages and drawbacks.

In this article, the researchers explain the influence of telehealth technology on better health across vulnerable communities. According to McElroy et al. (2020), the COVID-19 pandemic prompted an abrupt shift in the traditional US healthcare delivery system to meet the needs of patients, staff, and communities. In this sense, telehealth technology facilitates this shift by providing opportunities for telephone or online visits, videoconferencing, and remote patient monitoring. Further, the researchers argue that the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic and its subsequent effects necessitated the implementation of strategies for reducing and preventing physical contact and virus transmission. Therefore, the federal government allowed a more robust use of telehealth services by changing reimbursement guidelines, enhancing connectivity, and establishing a virtual collaborative learning network. The robust implementation of telehealth technology resulted in multiple benefits, including facilitating social distancing, promoting virtual care, and eliminating the need for in-person clinical visits. As a result, this article provides credible and up-to-date insights into the importance of incorporating telehealth technology into the current nursing practice.

Therefore, the researchers contend that telehealth technology provided an ideal alternative for care utilization among people with underlying conditions because it facilitated remote care, teleconferencing, the use of portable devices, video consultations, and telephone follow-up. Further, the technology-enabled triage and control of life-threatening conditions such as cancer and diabetes. However, this technology demonstrated various shortcomings, including technical and clinical quality, payment system issues, privacy concerns, and compromised usability due to users’ inadequate knowledge of the technology. This article provides credible information by synthesizing the current evidence on the topic to contribute knowledge and offer evidence-based recommendations for the effective implementation of telehealth technology.

In this scholarly study, Omboni et al. (2021) conducted cross-sectional, retrospective research involving community pharmacies and general practitioners distributed over the whole Italian territory. The focus of the study was to present healthcare professionals’ experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic based on telehealth interventions delivered to patients nationwide. According to the researchers, telehealth technology became a vital resource for containing and reducing the virus’s spread and insuring care continuity for patients with chronic conditions, including arterial hypertension and heart disease. The study revealed a significant improvement in patients’ ability to control blood pressure (BP) during the lockdown after virtual interventions such as medication reconciliation, vital sign monitoring, teleconsultation, and medication counseling. The researchers conclude that telehealth technology is essential in detecting deterioration of the health status during the COVID-19 pandemic, alongside promoting remote monitoring and medication counseling. Therefore, this article is relevant to the topic because it provides contextual importance and findings that support the implementation of telehealth technology in improving disease control and management.

Recommendations

The reviewed scholarly studies support the plausibility of improving care quality, timeliness, and efficiency by implementing telehealth technology. These studies present the technology as evolving and highly promising because it promotes virtual interactions between healthcare professionals and patients, eliminates the need for in-person clinical visits, and enables virtual care processes like vital signs monitoring, medication counseling, and timely communication. However, the effectiveness of this technology relies massively upon the ability to address barriers that compromise people’s capacity to embrace telehealth. Based on findings from the reviewed literature, healthcare organizations and policymakers should implement measures for improving internet connectivity in rural settings, train and educate community members on telehealth, transform reimbursement models, and foster patient privacy and data security by safeguarding telehealth systems and encouraging evidence-based data safeguards. These strategies can improve telehealth utilization and improve care quality, timeliness, equity, and accessibility.

A well-prepared annotated bibliography is a comprehensive commentary on the content of scholarly publications and other sources of evidence about a selected nursing-related technology. A bibliography of this type provides a vehicle for workplace discussion to address gaps in nursing practice and to improve patient care outcomes. As nurses become more accountable in their practice, they are being called upon to expand their role of caregiver and advocate to include fostering research and scholarship to advance nursing practice. An annotated bibliography stimulates innovative thinking to find solutions and approaches to effectively and efficiently address these issues.

Preparation
To successfully complete this assessment, perform the following preparatory activities:

Direct patient care technologies require an interaction, or direct contact, between the nurse and patient. Nurses use direct patient care technologies every day when delivering care to patients.
