The quality and safety education for nurses (QSEN) project initiated by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in 2005 identified knowledge, skills, and attitudes as profound competencies for nurses. According to Masters (2021), nursing core competencies include professionalism, leadership, patient-centered care, system-based practice, informatics and technology, safety, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice. Knowledge, skills, and attitudes enable nurses to make correct decisions and perform tasks consistent with the need to provide quality and convenient care (Rabie et al., 2020). Nursing education programs and pedagogical approaches should equip nursing learners with the ability to apply knowledge, recall previous experiences, and examine the impacts of clinical decisions on the patient (Sherwood, 2021). Knowledge encompasses the understanding of theoretical concepts of nursing, demands for holistic care, code of conduct, and cultural diversity.

On the other hand, skills entail interpersonal competencies like communication, listening skills, and respect, leadership, administrative, and personal skills. Finally, attitudes involve individual perception of nursing, including empathy, life-long learning, passion, sensitivity, and helpfulness (Rabie et al., 2020). Knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) enable nurses to apply theoretical evidence, develop meaningful relationships with patients, collaborate with other professionals, comply with ethical and professional standards, assume leadership and management roles, and demonstrate passion and commitment to create friendly clinical environments.
