Management Interviews Essay

Management Interviews Essay

Nurse managers have specialized knowledge and experience that can guide prospective nurse managers through organizational challenges and help them create winning managerial strategies. They can get useful insights, learn from the success and failures of nursing managers through interviews, and create a well-rounded understanding of the job of a nurse manager in today’s healthcare environment.

I had the chance to interview two nurse executives in management positions. The first interviewee was a charge nurse with less than two years of experience, while the second interviewee was a chief nursing officer with more than five years of experience in leadership. Both interviewees stressed the value of having an excellent clinical background and expertise in nursing while discussing the requirements for the management post.

The charge nurse mentioned that the job required effective transformational leadership and the capacity to multitask and prioritize duties. According to Marquis and Huston (2021), transformational leadership is crucial in nursing since it creates a favorable work environment, improves patient outcomes, and increases nurse job satisfaction. This leadership style inspires and empowers nurses to go above and beyond their jobs, establishing a shared vision and a sense of ownership in the healthcare organization.

Transformational leaders also enhance better patient care and outcomes by encouraging their nursing staff to be innovative, creative, and problem-solvers (Emma, 2019). A culture of ongoing learning and development is promoted by this leadership approach, which is important in the rapidly evolving healthcare sector. Transformational leaders can also help battle burnout and retention concerns by empowering and assisting their staff, resulting in a more stable and engaged workforce.

The need for higher education and professional growth, especially a master’s degree in nursing or a similar subject, was emphasized by the chief nursing officer. Studies have found that higher education and career development are essential for nursing leadership. Higher-educated nurses, such as those with a master’s or doctoral degree, are better equipped to manage healthcare organizations, lead interprofessional teams, and deliver high-quality patient care (Wood, 2021). Additionally, education allows nurses to develop the communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities necessary for effective leadership. Professional growth options, such as continuing education, mentoring, and networking, can help enhance leadership competencies and prepare nurses for leadership roles.

Both respondents acknowledged the value of on-the-job training and mentorship from more seasoned nurse managers when preparing for the management position. According to Jean (2021), nurses, and new nurses, in particular, experience challenges in their new positions. They must have a nursing mentor to help them through obstacles, including burnout, a hostile work environment, stress, and job dissatisfaction (Jean, 2021). The chief nursing officer and charge nurse attended leadership conferences and seminars to advance their knowledge and abilities. The charge nurse also finished a leadership course that the hospital offered.

Both respondents talked about the difficulties of leading a team with a range of experience and expertise when discussing obstacles and barriers. The chief nursing officer spoke about the difficulty of managing a large department with few resources. In contrast, the charge nurse discussed the difficulty juggling administrative and patient care obligations. Through innovative problem-solving and a dedication to excellence, the chief nursing officer and the charge nurse successfully navigated the challenges of leading a diverse team with limited resources and competing priorities.

Both interviewees talked about their capacity to raise staff satisfaction and improve patient outcomes when questioned about their successes and accomplishments. The chief nursing officer had implemented a new patient safety program that decreased the incidence of hospital-acquired infections, while the charge nurse had implemented a new nurse communication system that improved reaction times and decreased errors.

Both interviewees stressed the need to acquire communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills to perform well in their roles. The charge nurse addressed the need for excellent communication with patients, families, and staff, while the chief nursing officer underlined the importance of strong strategic planning and decision-making skills. According to Jankelová and Joniaková (2021), nurse managers’ communication skills significantly affect the nursing staff’s job satisfaction; therefore, effective communication skills from the managers are critical in solving disputes among staff.

Both interviewees stressed the need to acquire cooperation and problem-solving skills to perform well in their roles. Furthermore, they underlined the importance of solid clinical credentials, excellent communication, and prioritizing responsibility. The charge nurse also emphasized balancing patient care and administrative tasks, while the chief nursing officer discussed the difficulty of managing a large department with few resources. Both interviewees noted successes and accomplishments, such as improving patient outcomes and boosting staff satisfaction, demonstrating that the role of a nursing manager is both challenging and rewarding. This activity has improved my understanding of the functions and responsibilities of a nursing manager and has reaffirmed my belief that this is a position to which I aspire.

In your interviews, ask each person the following questions:
• What are the qualifications for your management position?
• What type of training did you experience for this position?
• What were some challenges/ roadblocks and how were these overcome?
