From a global perspective, natural disasters inflict a massive economic burden on countries. Jones et al. However, natural hazards, including floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, and forest fires affected over 100 million people, leading to over 15,000 deaths and an estimated $190 billion of global economic losses in 2020 (Jones et al., 2022). Although natural disasters are inevitable and highly destructive, people’s propensity to these impacts depends massively upon social determinants of health (SDOH) and contextual factors of susceptibility. Social determinants of health are non-medical conditions that determine and influence health outcomes, including education level, unemployment, food insecurity, housing, income, and access to affordable health services (World Health Organization, 2022). Amidst a disaster, these factors can contribute to social vulnerability and affect interventions for disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. For example, people of low income and those lacking access to quality and affordable health services are at-risk groups for the subsequent consequences of a disaster, including health issues, including injuries.

Healthcare professionals have an overarching role of assisting policymakers in addressing the social determinants of health that contribute to social vulnerability to disasters. They can influence policies and disaster recovery plans through advocacy. According to Abbasinia et al. (2020), advocacy in nursing entails multiple elements, including empowering clients, ensuring care continuity, whistle-blowing, and valuing diversity. Healthcare professionals can advocate for at-risk groups by influencing policies, assuming leadership and management roles in disaster recovery plans, and encouraging interprofessional collaboration with community members and institutions.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number 13 is consistent with all-concerted efforts to alleviate the impacts of natural disasters since it focuses on climate action and the determination to take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. According to the United Nations (n.d.), the primary targets for climate action include strengthening resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards, integrating climate change interventions into national policies and strategies, providing education and awareness of human and institutional capacity to mitigate, adapt to, and reduce the effects of climate change, and providing economic support to developing countries to enhance the capacity to prevent, respond to, and recover from natural disasters. These approaches are consistent with the determination to alleviate the consequences of disasters, including deaths, destruction of property, and economic losses.
