Economic Stability

Economic stability refers to the ability of individuals and families to meet their basic needs and maintain a stable financial situation. Economic stability plays a crucial role in shaping healthcare outcomes as it directly impacts an individual’s access to healthcare services, quality of care, and overall health and well-being (Schuh & Bush, 2021). In the United States, one in ten people live in poverty and cannot afford healthy foods, health care, and housing (HealthyPeople, 2020a). Lack of financial resources can limit peoples’ to afford health insurance, pay for medical expenses, or access necessary medications and treatments. This can result in delayed or inadequate healthcare, leading to worsened health outcomes and increased healthcare disparities (Ezzat, 2023). Additionally, economic stability influences the social and physical environments in which individuals live. People with limited financial resources are more likely to reside in neighborhoods with limited access to healthcare facilities, healthy food options, and recreational resources. These social and physical determinants can further exacerbate health disparities and contribute to poorer health outcomes.

The impact of economic stability on healthcare outcomes extends beyond access to care. Financial stress and economic hardships can lead to increased levels of chronic stress, anxiety, and mental health issues, which in turn can negatively affect overall health. Due to financial constraints, individuals experiencing economic instability may also face challenges in maintaining healthy lifestyles, such as engaging in regular physical activity or accessing healthy foods (Syed, 2020). These factors can contribute to the development and progression of chronic conditions such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

Economic Stability Objective

One of the objectives of economic stability from Healthy People is the aim to reduce the proportion of people living in poverty. This objective aims to decrease the percentage of individuals and families living below the federal poverty level. According to Healthy People 2030, 11.8 percent of persons were living below the poverty threshold in 2018,  and it targeted  8 percent by 2020 (HealthyPeople, 2020b).

The target population of the objective is individuals and families across the United States who are living below the federal poverty level. This objective recognizes that poverty is a significant barrier to economic stability and overall health and aims to address the underlying socioeconomic factors that contribute to health disparities (Gómez et al., 2021; Alcaraz et al., 2020).

Questions That The NP Could Incorporate Into The Health History And Interview To Assess The Client And Family

  1. In terms of financial stability, how would you describe your current household income and expenses? Are there any significant challenges or concerns regarding meeting your basic needs?

This question allows the NP to assess the client’s current financial situation, including their income, expenses, and potential challenges in meeting their basic needs. It provides insight into their economic stability and the extent to which poverty may be affecting their health and well-being.

  1. Have you or your family experienced any significant financial hardships recently, such as job loss, unexpected medical expenses, or difficulty paying bills? How have these circumstances affected your overall well-being?

This question explores the client’s experiences with financial hardships and their impact on the client’s overall well-being. It helps identify specific events or circumstances that may have contributed to their current economic situation and provides an opportunity to discuss the potential health implications of these hardships.

  1. Are you currently accessing any resources or programs to help with financial assistance, such as government benefits, community organizations, or local support services?

This question aims to assess the client’s awareness and utilization of available resources and programs that can support their economic stability. It helps identify whether the client is aware of potential resources that could alleviate their financial challenges and provides an opportunity for the NP to offer relevant information and referrals if needed.
