Your unit’s CAUTI rate has not decreased since the implementation of a new policy over a year ago. Financial repercussions of the high CAUTI rate cannot continue. You have been given the task of reviewing the policy and creating a SWOT Analysis, offering recommendations for change.

Rasmussen Hospital Policy and Procedure Manual Section: Urinary System Policy #421 Subject: Urethral Catheter Insertion Page 1 of 1 Effective: 1/1/2017 Approval: Joan Café, DNP, CNO Reviewed: Objective: To ensure proper completion of urethral catheter insertion. Responsibility: Registered Nurse Policy: It is the policy of Rasmussen Hospital to ensure that all urethral catheter insertions are completed under sterile technique. Two Registered Nurses are to be present for each insertion, and document according to the procedure outlined in this policy. Procedure: All urethral catheter insertions will be completed following the steps outlined below. 1. All insertions will be completed under sterile technique as outlined in the Lippincott Nursing Manual 2013. This manual/ text is considered the policy for the skill portion of catheter insertions. 2. Two RN staff members will complete each insertion. 3. One RN is to complete the insertion; the second RN is to assist and observe, ensuring that sterile technique is not broken. If the technique is broken, the Registered Nurse it to stop insertion and allow the second nurse to continue the procedure. 4. Once completed, both RNs are to document in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) the client’s response to the procedure and that it was completed under sterile technique.
