Healthcare organizations or agencies play an essential role in enhancing people’s health and safety. Nurses are critical stakeholders in public health, and as health and safety advocates, they must be aware of the many healthcare organizations and agencies. Furthermore, nurses must be cognizant of the assistance provided by the organizations to refer patients appropriately. The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) is an agency of the United Nations (UN) that provides humanitarian and developmental assistance to children across the world (United Nations Children’s Fund, 2021). While the founding goal was to give emergency aid to World War II-affected children and mothers (United Nations Children’s Fund, 2021), it has since expanded its scope to meet the long-term needs of women and children, especially in emerging countries. While referring to UNICEF, this paper aims to discuss how the agency’s mission and vision contribute to gains in public health and safety, its capacity to promote equal opportunities, and the influence of financing or regulations on its service delivery.

How does the Agency’s Mission and Vision Contribute to Public Health and Safety Improvements?

            The mission of an organization, or the purpose for which it is created, acts as a driving force to propel activities ahead. The mission statement of UNICEF is “promotes the rights and well-being of all children” (Villani, 2021). To accomplish its mission, the agency offers the essential amenities and opportunities for children to progress their abilities and extend their potential, improving their lives and health in general. Furthermore, UNICEF facilitates responses to unanticipated catastrophes and tragedies by sponsoring various disaster management strategies and programs, ensuring its clients’ safety.

Concerning the vision statement, UNICEF has made incalculable contributions to measures aimed at dealing with disasters more effectively. The agency’s vision is to build a world in which every child’s rights are fulfilled (Villani, 2021). A vision gives a clear direction for where the organization is heading, what it intends to accomplish, and what is required to achieve it. UNICEF, for example, has plans and makes decisions that are in keeping with defending children’s rights and guaranteeing them a longer and healthier life. Furthermore, efforts targeted at minimizing the burden of diseases and death throughout childhood increase children’s overall health and safety.

The Agency’s Ability to Promote Equal Opportunity and Improve the Quality of Life in the Community

            UNICEF works in over 190 nations and territories to make the world a better place for children. UNICEF recognizes girls from all walks of life who have broken through barriers in their communities and professions, establishing themselves as change agents and leaders. In South Asia, for example, as an approach to campaign for equal rights and opportunities among girls and boys, UNICEF utilized cricket sports (UNICEF, 2022a). Cricket has tremendous awareness-raising and change-effecting ability. For a long time, detrimental gender stereotypes have resulted in gender discrimination, with girls on the sidelines when it comes to sports. The cricket games organized by UNICEF’s South Asia regional director urged all females to join, expanding their presence in a male-dominated sport and giving them equal opportunities as boys.

In addition to providing equitable opportunities, UNICEF makes significant efforts to enhance the quality of life for its beneficiaries via its many initiatives. For example, in one of the health facilities in north-east Corte d’Ivoire, UNICEF, and its partners assisted in the delivery of 25 million live births through the agency’s deployed skilled birth attendants, and then proceeded to give the infants basic vaccinations and administered treated mosquito nets to prevent malaria, thereby improving the children’s and mother’s quality of life (Manu et al., 2018). Furthermore, UNICEF and its partners have provided better sanitation to millions of people, shielding them from hygiene-related illnesses. UNICEF and its partners also treat many children for severe acute malnutrition (SAM), preventing them from suffering the terrible consequences of SAM, one of which is death (Manu et al., 2018). Furthermore, by campaigning for and assisting millions of girls with education access, UNICEF and partners prevent them from child marriages, which would otherwise predispose them to teenage pregnancies, compromising their health, education, and future employment dreams.

UNICEF and its stakeholders may encounter several challenges when providing services to its beneficiaries. In certain societies, where males are considered superior, there exist norms that fuel discrimination and harmful practices, which may result in female children being excluded from significant events (Taylor & Salyakina, 2019). UNICEF programs to raise awareness and support for female child education aim to remove negative gender stereotypes. Poverty also isolates individuals from the decisions that most influence their life and puts barriers in the way of children’s education and health. Education is one of the many areas of a child’s life that UNICEF prioritizes, since it illuminates their future, allowing them to secure employment, increase their income, and therefore reduce poverty. Physical obstacles such as inadequate roads hinder children’s ability to live a healthy and safe existence free of poverty, illnesses, and ignorance. To achieve SDG 3.6, UNICEF collaborates with WHO and other global organizations to promote global road safety, remove healthcare disparities caused by poor roads, and decrease the number of worldwide fatalities and injuries from road traffic incidents. While these variables may impair UNICEF’s efforts to provide services, the organization avoids potential disparities in service delivery by taking into account all children, regardless of where they are born and the socioeconomic features of their households.

The Impact of Funding Sources, Policy, and Legislation on the Agency’s Provision of Services

UNICEF needs funds to run its activities seamlessly. There are also policies and guidelines to follow to guarantee that the agency’s services promote children’s rights and support equal opportunity. Strategies and activities inside the agency cannot be implemented unless enough financial resources are available. Individuals, the private sector, governments, and international organizations make voluntary donations to UNICEF (UNICEF, 2022a). The agency depends on this combination of robust finance as its principal driving force to realize its purpose of protecting the rights of all children, especially the most vulnerable. UNICEF raised a total of $8.1 billion in 2021, with the public sector contributing the most, approximately $5.9 billion (UNICEF, 2022c). While this money allowed it to carry out some of its main projects, it fell short of the $9.4 billion emergency financial appeal launched by UNICEF in 2021 to assist children impacted by the Covid19 crisis, violence, and climate change.

Policies and legislation impact the agency’s decisions in reducing poverty and disease. Furthermore, the rules shield the organization against concerns that might hurt its image and undermine its long-standing credibility. Insecurity may limit UNICEF’s ability to deploy workers in response to emergencies such as the recent earthquakes.

How does the Organization’s Work Impact the Health and/or Safety of a Local Community?

UNICEF’s operations, activities, and initiatives are all aimed at improving community health and safety. Immunization is a key UNICEF activity and an important primary health preventive and promotion strategy (Clark et al., 2020). Furthermore, the organization promotes HIV treatment for children and women, improves childhood and maternal nutrition, improves hygiene and sanitation, promotes education, and provides humanitarian assistance after natural calamities (Clark et al., 2020). The agency is generally concerned about children’s health and education, two critical pillars to developing a pool of healthy, informed, and competent individuals valuable to a country’s economy.

Nurses play an important role in accomplishing UNICEF’s goals as healthcare professionals, health advocates, and change agents. As the majority of the healthcare workforce, nurses work in a variety of settings, such as health prevention and promotion units, and are tasked with providing immunization services, promoting and supporting breastfeeding, managing disease screening programs, and appropriately referring patients to various institutions (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2019). In addition, nurses affiliated with UNICEF educate the population about different health promotion initiatives and the value of education. To be a member of the UNICEF task force, prospective nurses must submit an application paper, attend a mock interview, and then be approved and deployed suitably based on their skills and experience in their area of practice.

Conclusion

Healthcare organizations and agencies play an important role in ensuring the health and safety of the population. Nurses, as the bulk of the healthcare staff, as well as public health and change agents, must be aware of the numerous organizations and the kind of assistance they provide. UNICEF, founded mainly to assist children and women devastated by World War II, has extended its mission to fulfill the long-term needs of children and women in developing nations. UNICEF receives financing from a variety of sources, including individuals, governments, and the private sector, to pursue its mission of defending children’s rights and advocating for an equitable opportunity. While the organization has done an excellent job in improving community health and safety, cultural, social, and economic impediments that obstruct its rapid development in protecting children’s rights must be eliminated.
