Nursing Research Essay

Formatting is a critical aspect of a work presentation. Well-formatted work appears professional and is appealing to the reader. It also allows easy marking by bringing thoughts and ideas together. Thus, learning how to format in APA is crucial for any nurse. Nurses can control most clinical problems in healthcare because nurses implement most care interventions and are closest to the patients. They are also trained to assess patients routinely and determine any need for intervention changes. This essay will help improve the understanding and use of the APA format.

Clinical Problem and its Significance

The selected clinical problem is catheter-acquired urinary tract infections (CAUTIs). These are infections to the urinary system (kidney, ureters, bladder, and urethra) that can occur when bacteria ascend the urethra during insertion or care of a urinary catheter. The PICOT question is, among critically ill patients, can a CAUTI clinician and patient education program, compared to routine care, reduce the prevalence and mortality related to CAUTIs in six months? The population of interest is patients in critical care units such as the intensive care unit. The intervention selected is a CAUTI clinician and patient education program to educate them on catheter care and infection prevention. The expected outcomes are decreased prevalence of CAUTIs and their mortality. The time aspect is six months.

The research question was selected because CAUTIS are the most common hospital-acquired infections, accounting for about 40% of all hospital-acquired infections and about 80% of all hospital-acquired urinary tract infections (Basukala, 2021). In addition, they have a significant mortality rate of 10% (Basukala et al., 2021). They are associated with poor patient outcomes, poor patient satisfaction, and self-reported health experiences. The reasons, alongside a high rate of CAUTIs in the local facility, promoted this research question.

APA Reference Summaries

For this assessment, I searched my articles using google scholar and selected articles from databases such as Wiley, PubMed, EBSCO, and ProQuest. I used keywords such as education and CAUTIs to search for articles related to catheter-acquired urinary tract infections in critical care patients. I selected articles that fit the criteria and those from the last five years which are peer-reviewed.

Article 1

Abdelmoaty, A. M., Abdelghany, E. O., Soliman, M., Kenawy, A. M., & Doa’a, A. S. (2022). Improving Nurses’ Knowledge about Prevention of Catheter Acquired Urinary Tract Infections in Intensive Care Units. Open Access Macedonian Journal of Medical Sciences10(E), 638–642. https://doi.org/10.3889/oamjms.2022.8674

I selected this article because it discusses nurses’ knowledge and its significance in CAUTI prevention in the intensive care unit congruent to my population intervention. Results of the study showed that educating the nurses increases their knowledge scores from 61.4 to 90.5 and personal knowledge satisfaction from 13.3% to 90% in the pre-and post-test analysis. The study thus supports implementing an education program to improve knowledge which is significant to CAUTI prevention.

Article 2

Rubi, H., Mudey, G., & Kunjalwar, R. (2022). Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI). Cureus14(10). https://doi.org/10.7759/cureus.30385

I selected this article because it discusses the state of the art of catheter-acquired urinary tract infections. It also discusses the various interventions used to prevent CAUTIs. According to the study, CUATI prevalence is still high despite interventions such as monitoring devices. The article proposes education on hand hygiene to prevent CAUTIs, in line with the research question, which tests the importance of patient and clinician education on CAUTIS in preventing them.

Article 3

Reynolds, S. S., Sova, C. D., Lewis, S. S., Smith, B. A., Wrenn, R. H., Turner, N. A., & Advani, S. D. (2022). Sustained reduction in catheter-associated urinary tract infections using multi-faceted strategies led by champions: a quality improvement initiative. Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology43(7), 925–929. https://doi.org/10.1017/ice.2021.135

I selected this article because it discussed the various interventions to prevent catheter-acquired urinary tract infections. It discussed the interventions, such as patient and clinician education, checklists, and antibiotic treatment of catheters. There was a significant drop in catheter incidences (1.7 to 0.8 per 10000 patient days) and catheter utilization. The study shows that education and technologies to monitor catheter indications, number of days in situ, and constant monitoring can help prevent CAUTIS, supporting the PICOT’s intervention.

Conclusion

The APA format increases the presentability of work and enhances scholars to analyze and present their ideas logically. I selected catheter-acquired urinary tract infections as the problem of interest in this paper. The intervention of choice is a clinician and patient education on their prevention. Evaluating evidence from the articles also increased an understanding of the problem and will help answer the research question.
