Professional Presence and Influence C351 Advice from your Course Mentors for Performance Assessment YOT2/ULT2 General Information: For this assessment, you will navigate areas of focus that include your thoughts, attitudes, beliefs about healthcare (professional presence), what you bring to nursing (your personality), how you can improve your overall well-being (mindfulness practice), and the patient experience when they utilize healthcare (healing environments). These areas of focus will help you to create a professional presence plan that has both personal and professional application. You will be analyzing your inner world (thoughts, beliefs, and values) and your outer world (activities, relationships, and experiences). Each section of this assessment will gauge how you use and interact with those two worlds. To aid you in understanding your inner and outer worlds, you will take the Keirsey Temperament Sorter-II, an online personality test. With the test’s results, you will better understand your strengths and weaknesses and how you can be an effective individual and leader. Authentic leadership requires as much care and understanding for yourself as for those you will serve and lead. Your professional presence plan will integrate your insights, goals, and beliefs into a coherent whole. Recommendations/Requirements: • There is only one performance assessment for this course; it can be done as an essay or a multimedia (PowerPoint) presentation– o We recommend an essay as we see more PowerPoints returned for revisions due to insufficient detail. If you decide to submit in PowerPoint format, make sure to include notes slides with narrative discussion of the content. • APA format is required. Standard APA includes title page, running head, page numbers, double-spacing, headings, in-text citations, reference page, etc o First person is acceptable per APA in personal response essays such as this one o Purchasing the APA manual is highly recommended—it will be used in all nursing courses at WGU o Consult WGU Center for Writing Excellence for detailed APA help as needed • Length—there is no required or suggested length for the task. The average minimum has been 8 – 12 pages. • Sources—there is no required minimum number of sources, however, students that include at least 5 resources pass at a higher rate. Task Specifics: There are four topic areas that comprise one complete essay: • Professional Presence • Personality • Mindfulness Practice • Healing Environments Section A: Professional Presence A1: Discuss the differences between two models of health and healing. • There are three discussed in the COS—Era I, Era II, and Era III. You need to pick two of these and discuss the differences as it relates to what it means to be human. • What it means to be human—describe the components that contribute to the wholeness of a human being. o This article in the library has some good insight on the aspects of caring for humans: • Advancing Nursing Theory Through Theory-Guided Practice: The Emergence of a Critical Caring Perspective o The Eastern models also address holistic care o Is consideration of the patient’s physical, emotional, and spiritual needs important when providing nursing care? How does each Era address these components of humans? A2: Analyze the differences between one of the models in A1 and your professional presence. • You need to discuss the differences of your own beliefs, attitudes, and actions regarding health and healing as compared to one of the models that you discussed in A1. A3: Discuss how your professional presence (mindful or distracted) influences your nursing practice. • How does your being mindful or distracted when you are at work influence your nursing practice? Think about the distractions in the course of your day and if/how they impact your work and your professional presence. **I have removed Section B. This is a personality test that I have to complete myself and will insert into the paper** Section C: Mindfulness Practice C1: Develop a mindfulness practice plan consistent with your interests, goals, and beliefs. C1a. Create two goals for each of the four aspects (physical, emotional, spiritual, and vital/rhythmic). • That is a total of eight (8) goals. • The goals should be specific…instead of “I will eat better”, “I will incorporate four servings of fruits and vegetables into my daily meals” • Write how you will achieve EACH goal… “I will improve my diet by planning my meals weekly, creating a shopping list, and packing my lunches on the days that I work.” • Vital/rhythmic can be such things as your vital life force, i.e. energy, or life rhythms, such as biorhythms, Circadian rhythms, or rhythmic breathing exercises. What kinds of things renew your energy? Improve your sleep? Restore your energy balance? Bring you a sense of calmness? • Final part of this section: How will you be changed if you achieve all of your goals? How will you adjust to the change? Section D: Healing Environments D1: Analyze two optimal healing environments in healthcare and identify the four elements of each one—internal, interpersonal, behavioral, and external environments. *See Samueli Institute. • Find two hospitals that you can say have an optimal healing environment and describe how each of them meets all four elements (give examples of the four elements). • How can you find these two examples? o Look at the hospitals in your own community o Google “optimal healing environments in healthcare o Search for “Magnet hospitals” o Look at well-known facilities—Johns Hopkins, Brigham and Women’s, etc. (please do not use Mayo Clinic) D2: What did you learn from the above two examples that you can incorporate in your own facility? Final Aspects • Write a brief conclusion about using your professional presence to influence healthcare • Include a reference page in APA format. **Hint: Your in-text citations should exactly match the references on your reference page.
