PROBLEM IDENTIFICATION AND PICOT QUESTION PAPER
A. Problem Identification
You will identify and examine a problem of interest to your current specialty practice or to your future desired role. This should be a clinical (in your discipline) research question, not a medical question. In other words you should have control of the intervention (as a professional in your discipline) and the question you pose should be quantitative in nature. A way to identify a problem of interest may be to ask yourself or colleagues questions such as: Is there a better way of doing something? Would another intervention be more effective and improve client outcomes? What research-based intervention exists to improve current care in terms of client, provider, and community outcomes? Look in the literature for answers. Try to identify something for which you really want an answer. A brief introduction to the paper should introduce what the problem is and how was the problem identified.
B. Scope and Review of the Problem
Then review the literature and identify the scope of the problem. You are expected to provide two recent (in the last 5 years) references(may use website or other epidemiological sources) that you cite in your brief problem description. You may, for instance, cite morbidity and mortality statistics about this problem, etc. Then search the literature and give a brief literature review of three recent (in the past 5 years) professional peer reviewed US articles about the topic or document from research where gaps exist in understanding about the care or management of a client with this problem. You may wish to investigate an issue in organizational management, healthcare delivery systems, or community services as well.
C. Question Formation
Use the PICOT format to ask your question. (see pp. 29 & 30 and chapter 2 in Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt). PICOT format: Identify the Patient (Client) population/disease, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, and Time – PICOT.
In elderly women, 65 to 75 years old, do active wheelchair exercises affect leg stiffness complaints as compared to passive ROM routines over a three month period?
For example:
P= In elderly women, 65 to 75 years old
I= How do active wheel chair exercises
C= Compared to passive ROM routines
O= Affect the number of reports of stiffness in legs
T= Over a three month period
D. Formatting
The paper should be a maximum of four to five pages excluding references, double spaced. Headers with last name, first initial and page numbers should be used. All in text citations and references should be in APA format. Proper grammar and punctuation are essential. The writing should be clear and concise. This assignment must be the work of the individual student and not a group effort.
Please review the following information to help in writing your PICOT PAPER. The use of headings as listed will help in the organization and flow of the paper.
Problem Identification (4 points)
– In this section state the problem and how it was identified/why. At the end of this section list the PICOT question you developed in the format of
P =
I =
C=
O=
T=
Scope and review of the problem (
Scope of Problem
– Begin with a discussion of scope of problem using 2 (two) reference sources as a basis for this discussion. You may use websites for this section. So for example how many patients does this affect? How many health care dollars are spend on this problem? How does this problem affect patient care?
Review of Literature (12 points)
– paragraphs on literature review of 3 (three) quantitative research articles that present their results, implications, recommendations for further research about the problem question. You are discussing what these 3 research articles tell us about what we know now and what we still do not know from this research about this question. NOTE: this review should summarize the articles but you do not need to present a critique of the articles. If no articles were identified that directly pertain to your question discuss why you chose the articles you did and how they relate to your topic and question You are doing a limited review of the literature with only 3 research studies.
You are taking your 3 research articles about your PICOT question to review what is known and not known about your question. What do the results of the 3 studies tell you about your question. What do you not know based on these results? What limitations did these studies have? What was recommended for further research?
You can compare and contrast these areas across the 3 studies. This is the usual way of dong a literature review.
I had suggested that you cover these areas by summarizing this material for each research article separately
