Nursing and nursing theories can be applied to nursing practice in various environments. Healthcare environments, from hospitals, schools, and communities to home settings, have varied needs and require different skills and expertise. Theories can be used as a vital framework to guide the practices. Urie Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory, which focuses on understanding and addressing the complex interplay between individuals and environments, is the focus of this discussion (Evans, 2020). This discussion will explain how the theory is applied to my current healthcare environment (home health).

Urie Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory’s primary constructs emphasize the dynamicity and interconnectedness of human development. The theory explains how systems (chronosystem, macrosystem, microsystem, mesosystem, and exosystem) at various levels affect personal growth, behavior, and well-being and their interconnectedness and evolution (Evans, 2020). Home health environments are not calibrated to ensure maximum healing like healthcare environments. Ecological systems theory helps ensure all factors needed for patient maximum health are available. For example, health nurses focus on ensuring home environments have adequate factors to promote healing, such as clean air, adequate lighting, clean water, a safe place to sleep, and safety from hazards (biological, such as disease-causing insects and physical hazards such as fires).

The theory can also be used to explain the roles of family and community in the health and wellness of patients. It can be used to plan programs and events such as spiritual camps and community social interaction sessions to promote patients’ health and well-being. The theory can also provide a framework for research into community problems, including pandemics, endemics, and health disparities (Kitchen et al., 2019). Bettis et al. (2020) note that the ecological system can help assess the environmental influences on health in a community and thus aid in health management programs for individuals, families, and the community. Applying the theory in home health can thus ensure effective home health programs with quality patient outcomes. Concepts from non-nursing theories can thus be used to influence nursing practice and population health outcomes.
